What Are the Best Trees to Plant Near Your Home?
Lilly Pilly Tree (Acmena or Syzygium)
Lilly Pilly trees are a great all-rounder and are quite versatile, as they are able to be planted alone or as part of a hedge. There are a number of different species of these attractive, native trees, but most are fast-growing, hardy and easy to trim. come in a variety of different species and can be planted as a single tree or grown with multiple trees to form a hedge. The smaller species are great for smaller yards and courtyards, while the larger species can get quite large and almost all species are easy to care for; however, they are prone to a psyllid (Trioza eugeniae) which causes leaf disfigurement but doesn’t really affect the health of the tree. Lilly Pilly’s also grow an edible drupe, which is popular amongst jam makers.
Eumundi Tree (Elaeocarpus Eumundi)
Eumundi’s are great for those looking for an easy-to-care-for native tree. Growing about 5 to 10 metres tall, this is not a tiny tree, but their strong, tall and narrow stature makes them a great tree to plant alongside buildings, paths etc. Eumundi trees are an attractive species with thick, glossy foliage and are very low maintenance. They grow well in most Queensland conditions and will also do well in Northern NSW.
Tuckeroo Tree (Cupaniopsis anacardioides)
These beautiful trees are a very common street tree along coastal towns and the fact that they are hardy and simple to maintain adds to their appeal. Growing about 8 to 15 metres tall, the Tuckeroo tree does branch out a bit – meaning you’ll need to be somewhat selective about where to plant it – but in general, this is a great tree for planting near your home to create some shade. Disease and pest resistant, this lush, evergreen is a real beauty!
Bottlebrush Tree (Callistemon)
The Bottlebrush tree is one of Australia’s most popular natives and if you love to attract colourful native birds to your garden, this is the tree to plant near your home! This attractive tree boasts a covering of flowers shaped like the brushes used to clean out bottles. Well-suited to most Australian east-coast areas, the Callistemon is extremely hardy and very low maintenance. These beautiful trees are also quite small, so can be planted almost anywhere near homes or other structures.
Foxtail Palm (Wodyetia bifurcata)
Foxtail Palms are the idealtree to plant if you want a robust, easy-to-care-for tree that gives you that tropical paradise feel! Growing to around 15 metres in height, Foxtails are very slender and strong, so you’re able to plant them very close to structures without having to worry about them branching out too much or falling over easily. These palms look amazing planted by a pool or near a BBQ area and do wonderfully in QLD coastal conditions, so will thrive in Brisbane.
